Introduction to the Chakrasby Jeffrey Coleman, MA, LMT for Chanakara |

Chakra is an Indian word that means wheel or center of light. In our western world, we recognize seven centers of light within the body, each with specific associations to our emotions, glands, and body parts to name a few. Some schools of thought recognize dozens of chakras. Although not connected to any specific religion, chakras are, like many esoteric ideas, quite spiritual in nature. Many of the modern concepts related to the subject were borrowed from ancient spiritual and medical texts from India. The most successful of this initial research was done when a doctor from Chicago, named Randolph Stone, went to India to search for remedies and explanations for illnesses, which our limited western medical texts did not explain. He returned with a new explanation of the chakras that he included in a series of books he published in the 1950’s defining Polarity Therapy.
Polarity Therapy is a holistic health care system that contains ideas about illness, health, diet, and the body, which are just beginning to find acceptance nearly fifty years later. These include: Yoga, Energy Medicine, Positive Affirmations, Meditation and Vegetarian Diets.

Appropriately enough, this chakra is represented by the color red, the earth element and the three strong-willed astrological earth signs: Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. How fitting that the heavy-footed bull, the pristine bare-footed Virgin, and the earthy smelling goat represent the first chakra.
Additional Thoughts: If you’re student feeling a tad ungrounded at exam time, a mom with ten thousand errands to run or a business executive stressed by the idea of job security, you’re most likely experiencing imbalances in chakra one.

Appropriately enough, this chakra is represented by the color orange, the water element and the three emotional astrological water signs: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. How fitting that the water loving crab, the lobster-like scorpion, and the beautiful trout represent the second chakra.
Additional Thoughts: Are you a pack rat who can’t let go of things? Do you have old photographs of your ex? Are you so attached to your parent’s approval that it shapes your entire existence? If you answered yes to any of these, it might be time to look at your second chakra.

Appropriately enough, this chakra is represented by the color yellow, the fire element and the three intense astrological fire signs: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. How fitting that the hot-headed ram, the dramatic lion, and the swift archer, represent the third chakra.
Additional Thoughts: Is there someone in your life that you need to forgive? Do get angry easily or have trouble getting angry. Do you drink alcohol in excess? Better give your third chakra a check.

Appropriately enough, this chakra is represented by the color green, the air element and the three busy and inventive astrological air signs: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. How fitting that the ever-busy twins, the undecided scales, and the ambitious water bearer represent the fourth chakra.
Additional Thoughts: Imagine, as was the case in ancient times, that green symbolized stop and red symbolized go. At a green light you would stop and at a red light you would go. Some say this color mix-up has led to a culture that thinks more than it feels. Can you look in the mirror and say our loud, “I love myself unconditionally.” If not, it might be time to check number four at the door.

Appropriately enough, this chakra is represented by the color blue, and symbolized as an empty bowl of ether. This chakra has no formal astrological connections.
Additional Thoughts: Have you ever had a sore throat due to uncommunicated ideas? Are you a person that cries too frequently? Are you the stereotypical, unemotional, and stoic male? Perhaps you have a chakra five imbalance.

Appropriately enough, this chakra is represented by the color indigo and the light element. This chakra has no formal astrological connections.
Additional Thoughts: If you’ve followed your intuition to the movies, a yoga class or a long bath, your sixth is on the right track. However, if, after eating ice cream in bed all week your regiment of self-care has become rather indulgent, better check out the state of your sixth.

Appropriately enough, this chakra is represented by the color violet and the energy element. This chakra has no formal astrological connections
Additional Thought: This chakra projects right up into the heavens like one of those creepy alien abduction light beams. It’s no wonder if you’re feeling disconnected to others, the world as a whole or to Spirit, number seven needs a check up.
